ABOUT MY DIGITAL DETOX VACATION

About my digital detox vacation. (How was your digital detox holiday, by the way?)

About my digital detox vacation… I recently came back from 3 weeks of pure fun and relaxation. I went camping old school with very little stuff, just like the old days where I was a student. I also launched this idea on my social media, if you didn’t see my article on that, you can read it HERE. Our tent was placed with an amazing view on a small lake and since we forgot our camping light(s) we enjoyed the evenings even more as we sat in the dark sipping good French wine and having good conversations and lots of old-fashioned fun. No distractions from our phones as we completely shut them off except for a couple of moments where I had to check some mails that required my answer. But apart from that: no constant sharing of my holiday pics on social media or throught messaging with friends and family. Completely unnecessary. I did not even check my social and had no idea what was going on there. Maybe a strange thing to do when you’re an influencer making a living online. Anyway, I can only recommend doing a digital detox. I already do/did this on a daily basis not using my phone/mail before 8 am in the morning and shutting it down in the evening. I don’t feel the need to be constantly online. And what kind of a self-care coach would I be if I didn’t walk the talk myself? I practice what I teach. OK, I am not perfect. Perfect is boring anyway. šŸ˜œ But how on earth could I motivate my clients and followers to do what I teach them if I don’t do it myself? So anyway, I’ve been camping in the first 10 days of my digital detox and it was GREAT!! See below for an impression of our camp site.Ā

The good old days didn’t ‘need’ a digital detox vacation.

When I travelled as a student there weren’t even smartphones and the only way to communicate was a phone cell where you still needed coins to make a call. good times… except for the times when you ran a flat tyre on a bike trip in the middle of nowhere where you wished you could call someone to pick you up… haha… But the thing is: we survived those times too! Ā I launched this digital detox exercise on my social media channels and here on my blog as in my practice working with individual clients and also working with teams in companies, I see every single time that the constant noise in our modern world is one of the reasons people can’t relax, suffer from burn-out, gain weight, have stress related health issues, are unhappy, feel lonely, are unproductive,…. and so on… I hope you joined me for a digital detox on your vacation. Let me know your experience here in the comments. If you didn’t join me, why didn’t you? What was holding you back? What were you afraid of? Those are one of the things I work on with individual clients and in corporate programs on self-care and wellbeing at work.Ā

My experience with this digital detox.

My digital detox weeks were exactly what I needed and also the company I travelled with. After a couple of heavy months on a personal and professional level, we all needed to take some time off from the rat race and we have a plan to stick to that the rest of the year as well. I am going to make my working days even shorter with razor sharp focus on the things I really want to do, deleting or delegating the tasks that drain my energy and keep me from working in my zone of genius where I deliver my best and life-transforming work that is changing people’s lives.

The two kids that travelled with us, including my daughter Gina, will be our challenge for the next trip. Getting teenagers away from their phones was an impossible task. It has become part of their world and I do see the benefits of it as it is their way of communicating. But also it is a constant source of stress. It also lacks a form of deeper meaning and communication where the old-fashioned world of reading books, writing handwritten letters and real one-to-one conversation had/has a different energy. Everything has to go so fast, they stress over their online presence, finding their online identity, worrying about social bullying,… We are thinking on how we can get them to realise this as I feel this could also help younger people to avoid the rat race… But in order to inspire them I needed to walk the talk myself. As a mom, as a parent I can never inspire my daughter when I do not follow my own advice. Curious if you have similar experiences or worries about our younger generation.
